How Does Lingo Work?

Once your Lingo adaptor arrives, you connect it between your phone, cable modem and computer.  Then you simply make calls as you normally would using any other service.

The adaptor breaks up your voice into data packets and sends it over the internet.  Once your call reaches the receiving end, these packets are converted back into your voice.  Your voice sounds like it would with any other phone service.  You also answer calls as you do now.  Lingo saves you from high monthly bills while giving the quality of service that you expect.

What is VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)?

VoIP converts the voice into a digital audio packet and sends it over broadband internet.

  • You place a call from your analog phone (hard line).
  • VoIP providers send your call through an adapter that breaks up the voice into packets.
  • These voice packets are sent over the internet through your modem.
  • Your call is sent to another regular or cordless phone.

The adapter splits your broadband connection (high-speed internet), thus allowing you to use the internet on your computer at the same time.  You will be able to send and receive messages, emails and browse pages at the same time you talk on the phone.
A person calling you does not need a VoIP provider or any special equipment to do so.

What do I need for Lingo service?

The following are required to use Lingo:

  • A hard line touch-tone phone, regular or cordless
  • A high-speed broadband internet connection—cable or DSL
  • A Lingo adaptor (provided upon becoming a member)
  • Online bill-pay capabilities

Can I use more than one phone with your service?


Yes!  Here are some ways to do it:

  • Use a cordless phone base with extra handsets.  The base plugs into your Lingo adaptor and your handsets can be placed throughout your home or business.
  • Use a multiple jack extension connector.  Connect one of your phones with the adaptor and plug the rest of your phones together with the extensions.
  • Use wireless phone jacks.  These devices are plugged into electrical sockets and convert them into phone outlets.  Simply connect the base unit with your Lingo adaptor and place the extensions where you will need another phone.

Could I use the Internet while I'm talking on the phone?

Yes.  Your computer and internet connection should be unaffected by Lingo.  The adaptor splits the broadband connection allowing you to browse the web while you use the phone.
Downloading large files while on the phone may lower the quality of your calls, but you can adjust your downloads to be minimized while using Lingo.  Bandwidth boost—a complimentary feature of Lingo—allows your internet to run faster and eliminates static and echo on the phone.

What country codes are available?

Your specific plan will have different codes available.  If you are not certain if the prefix is included in your plan, you may search Premium/Special Services under the Rates section of the website.

How long does it take to get Lingo service working?

You will receive your Lingo adaptor through UPS 3-5 days after signing up for the service.  You can have Lingo running within minutes of receiving your adaptor.  If you have questions about installation, the Customer Care team will be happy to assist you.


Do I need to have my computer turned on to use Lingo?

No.  Lingo uses the internet, but you do not need to have your computer on.  Your high-speed broadband connection is routed through your adaptor.  Simply use your phone as you normally would with a traditional service.


Can I keep my existing phone number with Lingo service?

Yes.  Upon becoming a member, you fill out a letter of authorization to switch your phone number from your current provider to Lingo.  Within 7-14 business days you will receive a confirmation letter letting you know you may cancel your service with your current provider.  During the 7-14 day waiting period, you are given a temporary phone number to use so that you may use Lingo immediately.
